MC Cham Jr., the National Youth President for Gambia Democratic Congress, GDC has cogently dismissed ludicrous claims that President Adama Barrow and his NPP would win 75% of the ballot if Gambians vote today. Cham was speaking to forGambia News & Radio on Wednesday, August 12th 2020.
The eloquent GDC voice did not mince his words about how desperate Adama Barrow has become in clinging unto power by simply trying to appease the APRC base he has always infringed upon since he came to power. Without a support base for his NPP, he now tries to make a u-turn.
Cham also remarked that the President’s support comes from those that are angry with the United Democratic Party (UDP), or at least try to make some mockery of them. But Ousainou Darboe, Cham computed, has been out of government for sixteen months and nothing still has changed for the better. Below are excerpts from the interview:
“People support Barrow because they Hate UDP. If they say Barrow will win 75% votes if elections are held today, that’s a deceiving statement. If he really has 75% of the support base of Gambians, why didn’t Barrow call for elections within three years or any bye elections?”
“And secondly, Barrow doesn’t have genuine supporters. People support Barrow because of their dislike of UDP. That’s why they support Barrow. But Barrow does not have genuine supporters. All those who are supporting Barrow [it is because] they don’t like UDP that’s why they’re just sympathizing with Barrow just to make a mockery towards UDP, but it’s not about genuine support.”
“Barrow, for me, if at all he can try, he may have 10% right now in Gambia. You know Barrow is desperate. Barrow forming an alliance with APRC means killing APRC because APRC, themselves know that Barrow is not genuine [ ]. And APRC supporters will not even rally behind Barrow because they know [Barrow and team] are their enemy.”
“They are trying to please APRC, telling them that their problem is Ousainou Darboe, you understand? And right now, Ousainou Darboe has been out of government for about sixteen months now, but what has changed? Did Barrow return their assets? No!”
“These Barrow people, they tell APRC that they love them, that Darboe was their problem. And now Darboe is out of the government for 16 months. What has changed? All the APRC assets Barrow seized, let him return them. The past 22nd July that was just gone, Barrow denied them a celebration of the anniversary and Darboe is not in government. All their money, Barrow hasn’t returned it!”
Covid-19
“The amount of money entering Gambia, that 5.08 billion—Gambia could have utilized it best, lock the country and have a zero Covid case,” Cham noted. He added the government, with that kind of money could support everybody.
When reminded of other politicians such as Halifa Sallah not making brilliant analysis like his, he reiterated, “No, the problem is, their problem is UDP. They are supporting Barrow because they hate the UDP. But that’s wrong! Gambia is bigger than UDP and NPP,” Cham noted, concluding that hating Lawyer Ousainou Darboe does not mean we have to let Barrow commit wrong.
