European Union Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E Attila Lajos told forGambia News & Radio that his organization’s electrification of Gambia has already started. Speaking to us in Thursday’s exclusive shortly upon jetting back to the country from overseas, the ambassador stated the E.U hopes to electrify all schools and health facilities in The Gambia with the ongoing solar project.
The ambassador also praised both the Barrow government and the ‘3YRS Jotna’ group for a peaceful protest last December, the events of which came contrary to widespread anticipations.
“I certainly commend the peaceful protest which took place in December in Banjul. I think Gambia needed a peaceful protest—an example of a peaceful protest. The country probably needed it like a piece of bread. This is because all the earlier protests eventually ended in some sort of loses, damages, even people died some years ago,” the Ambassador pointed.
“So, it is very important for a new emerging democracy to have a protest like that. I have to commend both sides of the barricade metaphorically speaking—both the demonstrators for their peaceful performance, but also, I have to commend the state authorities and security services who actually partnered in this protestation,” he mentioned.
“I understand when I talked to the interior minister, I was informed that in fact, their modus operandi, which was never applied before in The Gambian history with the police escorting the demonstrators [included] the non-uniformed officers and the armed riot police who were behind the scenes. In fact, for the demonstrators, it was not a shocking optic—a shocking visual of fully-geared police officers surrounding them,” he mentioned. The rest of the exclusive interview is on forGambia radio.
