Ebrima F. Jawneh of the University of The Gambia has emerged winner of the forGambia News Essay Writing Competition submissions for which ended on August 18th 2025. He is a resident of Sinchu Alajie of the West Coast Region.
Profile:
Jawneh was born on October 10th 1998. He attended Barrow Kunda Lower Basic School in Wulli and graduated from there in 2014. He later attended Latrikunda Sabiji Upper Basic School and graduated in 2017.
He then went to Yunus English School of Busumbala and finished in 2022. In 2023, he joined the University of The Gambia’s School of Arts and Sciences where he is currently enrolled.
Bio:
Jawneh is the son of late Foday Jawneh (diseased in 2016; may Allaah have mercy on his soul) and Fatoumata Sisawo. His mother Fatoumata is living. He has a ten year old little brother called Alieu Jawneh.
He has three older brothers: Muhammad Jawneh, Amadou Jawneh, and Alajie Jawneh. The token cash prize of D3000.00 was handed to Jawneh Saturday, August 23rd 2025 by Lamin Jobarteh who was a winner of the same competition organized by this medium in 2020.
Lamin J. Darboe of the University of The Gambia is the runner up. He is not related to the renown Lawyer Lamin J. Darboe even though their names and middle initials all match.

Nyima Camara of Gambia College, School of Education wrote the third best essay. She also won the first-to-register cash prize of D2,000.00 and was handed the money the same day as Jawneh.
Again, these moneys are nothing, but gestures of encouragement. The history and effort are what matter most. We asked students how much they spend a month on daily school pocket money we all grew up calling “lunch.”
They calculated a breakdown of daily expenses on various food items sold at school. A total of D2,000.00 per month was what they arrived at. We increased it to D3,000.00 a month and we will be holding these writing competitions every month (insha Allaah).

Registrations will soon open for the September 2025 competition which we will announce shortly. Please it’s a good idea to prepare or even write your essay and be on standby. As soon as we attach the registration form at the bottom of the announcement, simply paste your essay and submit.
