We received news of indictment of three big shots at Gambia’s health ministry. Mr. Muhammadou Lamin Jaiteh (Permanent Secretary, MoH), Mr. Balla Kandeh (Program Manager, Malaria Control Program), and Mr. Omar Malleh Ceesay (Executive Director, HepDO [Health Promotion and Development Organization]) all at the Ministry of Health are charged with corruption.

We recall the D5.8 billion covid funds that the government of The Gambia received, but the impact of which are still yet to be seen.
We also reported in 2020 from an insider at the same health ministry how corrupt officials were embezzling funds, only for Minister Samateh to spew that his gov’t couldn’t fight corruption. We hope the Gambia gov’t will come with the details surrounding what exactly these three did and how. Below is the scoop of today:

“The Attorney General’s Chambers and the Ministry of Justice has officially filed an indictment against three senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Health Promotion and Development Organization (HePDO). The individuals charged are Mr. Muhammadou Lamin Jaiteh, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health; Mr. Balla Kandeh, Programme Manager of the Malaria Control Programme; and Mr. Omar Malleh Ceesay, Executive Director of HePDO.

The charges brought against these individuals include a wide range of offences, including official corruption, economic crimes, theft, forgery, and conspiracy, all of which are connected to the utilization of the 2018 Global Funds grant allocated to the Ministry of Health of The Gambia.”
