Since the Barrow government came to power, it contracted Gambia’s electricity supply to a foreign company, Senelec. Senelec is from a country that has more poor and suffering people than our little Gambia’s entire population.
This medium’s founder used to lament live on air on other fora how in the world the Barrow government would pay Senelec around D25 million Dalasis per month while we can train and equip our own NAWAEC and staff to better cater to our electricity needs.
The electricity problem in The Gambia has never been solved by Senelec, a hustler company who is there just for business interests. Nor has it been solved by the Turkish mobile supplier in our waters. These are both deals not in the best interest of the average Gambian.
We were the first media house to be gung-ho on fighting for the poor in The Gambia. And we covenanted to expose the nasty corruption and dizzying heights of it, especially amid gross or perhaps deliberate ineptitude.
The D500 million Covid money was just a tip of the iceberg. Barrow is living larger than most American millionaires while Gambians still embrace a perennial electricity problem. Senelec cannot help Dakar or Cassamance.
Anybody in his right mind knows it can’t help neither Senegal’s direly poor, nor Gambia’s token of it. And millions of Senegalese citizens seriously depend on Gambia and her resources!
Finally, why is it that Gambia’s electricity problem deteriorates most in Ramadan? Remember when the people of Farato faced a similar problem back in 2017? And the Serrekunda area ditto? Almost every Ramadan in The Gambia has been like that since then for some section of the country.
When will our government use money for the right reasons in the right places before ever thinking of spending over D600 million Dalasis on a constitution review, the crux of which is copied from the Kenyan constitution?
Why would government officials even think of per diem and endless travels when Brikama-ba cannot afford a basic item as cold drinking water?
Remember how the same constitutional Review Commission team traveled to foreign countries, wasting our millions just to have a travel fun when that money could have fixed something more important? Please think of what we say or write!
