A population of barely 2 million, The Gambia ranks number 8 for the number of road accidents per country per year, according to data from a newly formed NGO, ‘Road Safety Gambia.’ In an exclusive air time with forGambia Radio Friday, July 10th 2020, the organization’s president, Mr. Modou Lamin Morro Camara and his vice president Mr. Abou Ceesay expressed patriotic concerns over such worrying statistics for a small country. The new NGO hopes to engage not only the civil society, but also the relevant governmental bodies in  road safety sensitization campaigns and necessary programs. The police, drivers and motorists (both private and commercial), and any vulnerable road users in The Gambia would be integral partners.
Even cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training could come as a form of sensitization and education campaign according to Mr. Camara who had visited the U.S city of Nashville, Tennessee where he met some specialists who would not mind joining the drive to help Gambians the little way they could.
But the new NGO hopes to tap more from the participation of Gambians both at home and in the diaspora. Both Camara and Ceesay stated that their organization has just emerged and would come up with more plans and conversations, key among which includes children’s safety on the road.
Asked to shed light on the aims and objectives of Road Safety Gambia, Vice President Ceesay replied, “We established the (NGO) road safety to educate vulnerable road users, drivers etc..about road traffic accidents. Road safety education can help prevent avoidable accidents, save lives and keep our society safe and functioning.”
