ACUTE TRANSPORT
SHORTAGE HITS COUNTRY!

A nation-wide strike by Gambia's Transport Union is on with serious shortage of commercial vehicles! PIU arresting drivers!

Drivers say it is very unfair for them to be limited in the number of passengers they should carry per trip, while government vehicles do as they please, with normal capacity. Consequently, the nation is hit by an acute shortage of sedan taxis, vans, “Gele-Geles” and other commercial vehicles.”

The passenger cap was instilled by the Gambia government in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, vehicles from Foni area were lined up for allegedly breaking the the COVID rule.

Here’s what an eye witness sent to forGambia Monday morning: “The drivers association today Monday are on a demonstration complaining that government departments and institutions are not following the Covid 19 restrictions. The drivers said government vehicles do full capacity to more than the required amount.

They said they are not equally treated as drivers. Currently in Tabokoto, drivers are mounting a demonstration. The chief of drivers of Tabokoto is just arrested and some youth drivers are picked up and are in PIU police vehicles. The numbers are increasing and it is a country-wide demonstration from Banjul to Basse.”
