Former President Yahya Jammeh’s Kanilai compound was ablaze since Tuesday, local sources told forGambia Wednesday. Animals looking like dead Kangaroos were caught in the inferno with unknown causes as yet.
Our investigators, as of now say the fire started from nearby Alakunda, a sister village to Kanilai. It continued through the garden of the former president in Kanilai down to the “interior” of the once most fortified dwelling in The Gambia.
“The fire has caused a lot of damage to animals and some property belonging to the former president, Jammeh. Some of the houses have also been affected,” a local source stated.
“I poke to a native of the village; he said they contacted the local fire service of Kanilai but was told their [fire vehicle] was faulty and not in good condition.”
“In the Kombos, someone also contacted the Brikama Fire Station who said they had only one car which was also on duties. Banjul was also contacted but we were told their boss was in a meeting,” local informers told this medium.
Contacted, family members of the former President said they couldn’t tell the cause of the fire. Fire outbreaks have become somewhat endemic to Gambia for the past few months. A Kanifing gas store, the Ministry of Fisheries, residential fires, etc are just few examples.
