Fish shortages and rising cost of living have been hitting Gambia extremely hard since Adama Barrow took over. This is because he has given our resources to special interest groups, most of whom are non-Gambians that don’t care if our poor families eat or starve.

Again, this is one of the topics we have been lamenting at this medium. We thank Pa Modou Bojang’s Menbekering and Malagen’s Mustapha Darboe for the brilliant efforts they put into unheartening the real cause of this.

This morning, we came across Pa Modou Bojang’s market interview of Brikama market vendors and buyers about the same issue. Quite striking is the take by a male fish vendor who stated that the Chinese have vessels that are tolerant to heavy winds.

They fish and store their catch until scarcity hits the local markets. Then they bring out what they froze in ice earlier. But they double the price when our local fishermen couldn’t catch much due to heavy winds. Before Ramadan, a D1000 basket of fish now costs D2000 from the same Chinese.

Families starve and suffer in this Holy month while prices are determined by those without any heart for our poor masses. Fish is usually far cheaper than lamb or beef in The Gambia. It is the staple that determines hunger or ease.

Think of the D150,000.000 daily fish money Barrow gets. Think of the per diems corrupt officials claim from our poor coffers. Now, think of how many sophisticated fishing vessels we could buy from such money, train and employ our own youths into fishing! Africa isn’t poor. Africa has filthy, heartless creatures in office!
